Q:  What are the City Ordinances related to oversized vehicles?

A:   City of Pacifica Municipal Code Sections 4-7.1204 & 4-7.1205

Q:  What is considered an oversized vehicle (OSV)?

A:  Any vehicle or combination of vehicles 22 feet or more in the length,  or 7 feet or more in width, or 8 feet or more in height.

Q:  Why can’t I park my oversized vehicle on my road?

A: Due to traffic safety conditions when oversized vehicles are present, the City of Pacifica passed updated ordinances limiting parking of oversized vehicles on certain streets. The list of streets that OSVs are not allowed to park on can be found at: https://www.cityofpacifica.org/depts/police/vehicles/oversized_vehicles_parking.asp

Q:  Is there a reference available that shows where OSV parking is allowed?

A: Yes.  Please follow this link to the OSV allowed parking map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1DqiHObCfPZ8BMmboPn_nskR43i51WTHK&ll=37.63339551739823%2C-122.49215450006831&z=18

The list of streets available for OSV parking can be found at: https://www.cityofpacifica.org/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?t=66700.4&BlobID=18720

Further, the City has also made the above-referenced lists and a link to the map to be made available upon request at the Pacifica-Sharp Park Library, the Pacifica-Sanchez Library, and at City Hall.  Please contact those Libraries and the City for any access limitations put in place due to COVID-19.

Note that the lists and the map may be updated as changes are made to the City’s roadways by resolution of the City Council or pursuant to a finding of the Traffic Engineer identified by signage that may make the area either safe or unsafe for OSVs to park on.  [Pacifica Muni. Code Sec. 4-7.1204(b); Sec. 4-7.1205(a)]

Q:  Can I temporarily park my OSV to load or unload?

A: Yes, you may park for the purposes of actively loading and unloading only, for not more than 8 hours. You may also apply for a permit that will allow OSV loading and unloading for up to 36 hours at the following link:  https://www.cityofpacifica.org/depts/police/vehicles/oversized_vehicles_parking.asp

Q: I have oversized vehicles parking on my road that is designated for no OSV parking, what should I do?

A:  Please call the Pacifica Police Department 650-738-7314 to report any OSVs parking on roads which prohibit OSV parking.

Q: Can I park my OSV vehicle anywhere on roads that are designated for OSV parking?

A: No, roads that are designated for OSV parking still may have uncontrolled intersections that OSVs are not allowed to park within 100 feet of.  [Pacifica Muni. Code Sec. 4-7.1205(a)(2)]  Additionally, there may be other OSV-related or parking-related signed restrictions on these roads as well as other ordinances, laws, or codes governing parking on the City streets, such as restrictions on blocking driveways [Cal. Vehicle Code Sec. 22500(e)], parking in front of fire hydrants [Cal. Vehicle Code Sec. 22514], bus zones [Pacifica Muni. Code Sec. 4-7.1306], loading zones [Pacifica Muni. Code Sec. 4-7.1302], etc. Please be mindful of signs that indicate no OSV parking even on roads that are designated allowed for further parking restrictions.  In particular, there may be sections within the allowable street segments that the Traffic Engineer has determined are unsafe for OSV parking and has posted no parking signs.

Q:  How long can OSVs park on roads where they are not prohibited?

A:  Per Pacifica Municipal Code Section 5-2.03 and the California Vehicle Code, vehicles legally parked on a street are allowed to remain for no more than 72 hours. To report a vehicle parked in excess of the 72-hour limit, contact the Pacifica Police Department at 650-738-7314.

Q:  A street is on the list where OSV are not allowed to park, so why isn’t there a sign on stating there is no oversized vehicle parking allowed?

A:  As is the case with other traffic related Municipal Code signage, excessive signage is avoided.  Thus, not all streets where OSVs are prohibited are signed.  OSV vehicle signage is posted at all City entrances, select neighborhoods that have a singular entrance with all roads designated no OSV parking, and along sections of roadway with multiple incidents of unsafe OSV parking.

Q:  How do I pay or dispute my parking citation?

A:  You may follow the instructions on the citation or go to https://www.pticket.com or call 800-352-7567. It may take up to a week for the citation to be entered into the online system.

Q: What do I do if I see illegal behavior or safety issues related to OSV parking?

A: Any illegal or immediately unsafe behavior should be referred to the Pacifica Police Department at 650-738-7314. Should you have non-emergency traffic related issues, please contact the Engineering Division at 650-738-3769.

Q: Where can I find Council Reports related to OSV?
