Home MenuPlanning Permits
The Planning Division reviews applications for a range of land use permits and entitlements. Not every project requires a planning permit. Some work, like interior remodels and most single-family home additions, need only a building permit. When a planning permit is required, your project may need more than one permit type depending on its scope and location.
Some permits are processed ministerially using objective standards; others involve discretionary review by staff or the Planning Commission. State housing and land use laws also shape how we review applications — see our State Planning Laws page for key legislation that may affect your project.
Select a permit type below to learn when it applies, what findings are required, and how it's reviewed. Application materials and submittal checklists are available on the Handouts and Forms page.
Once you have your planning approvals — or if your project doesn't require any — the next step is to apply for a building permit. Visit the Building Division page for information on building permits, inspections, and submittal requirements.
