Pacifica & The Environment

The citizens of Pacifica realize that their surroundings contain many natural wonders and consequently place great emphasis on environmental sensitivity and responsibility. In partnership with local, area and national environmental groups, the community also supports a variety of in-town grassroots organizations that together strive to protect and improve Pacifica's natural surroundings.

Ongoing efforts include beach clean-ups, erosion control, native flora, fauna and topography restoration, endangered species protection, green building techniques promotion, alternative energy generation, sustainability practices, organic foods production and environmental education programs.

In early 2008, the appearance of tar balls on Pacifica beaches prompted observation and clean-up efforts by local and regional authorities. For general information on tar balls that may wash up on local beaches, please review the U.S. Coast Guard/CA Department of Fish & Game fact sheet.

Further information on Pacifica can be found in the latest Indicators Report by Sustainable San Mateo County. This report tracks 33 economic, social and environmental indicators that provide an objective look at the overall health of San Mateo County.
